About this piece

Felix Mendelssohn's “Wedding March” from A Midsummer Night's Dream, Op. 61 is one of the most recognizable ceremonial pieces in classical music.

Its brilliant opening, energetic triplet figures and festive orchestral character have made it especially associated with weddings and recessional ceremonies, while the work remains an important example of Mendelssohn's Romantic orchestral writing.

Although many arrangements reproduce only the famous opening theme or simplify the work considerably, the original score contains a richer succession of secondary lines, harmonic movement, articulations and contrasting musical material.

About this Violin Duet & Piano edition

This arrangement by Maiko Thomé de Araujo was developed as part of a series of editions prepared with direct reference to Mendelssohn's original orchestral score.

The goal is to retain the recognizable structure and musical progression of the work while translating its orchestral texture into an effective chamber setting for:

Violin 1 + Violin 2 + Piano

The two violins do more than simply double the main melody. They alternate between shared thematic material, complementary lines and independent voices, creating a richer string texture and preserving more of the interaction found in the orchestral source.

The piano provides the harmonic foundation, rhythmic weight and additional inner material needed to give the arrangement a full and ceremonial sound.

A more complete chamber arrangement

Rather than presenting a short wedding excerpt, this edition follows the broader musical structure of the piece and preserves characteristic details wherever practical.

Important articulations, triplet figures, ornaments, accents and harmonic movement are retained, while the performers remain free to make subtle adjustments of bowing, articulation, phrasing and balance according to the ensemble and performance space.

The result works both as a practical ceremonial arrangement and as genuine chamber repertoire for two violins and piano.

Chord symbols included

Chord symbols are included as an additional harmonic reference.

They can be useful for rehearsal, harmonic study, arranging or adapting the score for additional accompanying instruments.

Performance tips

Keep the characteristic triplets light, precise and forward-moving, avoiding excessive weight on each group of three. The two violinists should coordinate articulation and phrase direction carefully, especially where their lines move together, while preserving independence when the parts separate. The piano should provide orchestral breadth and rhythmic stability without covering the violins; clarity and balance are more effective than excessive volume.

Recommended for

Especially suitable for violin duos with piano, wedding and ceremonial performances, chamber recitals, student or teaching ensembles and classical crossover programs. It is also useful for developing ensemble balance, rhythmic coordination, matching articulation and independent two-violin playing.
