About the piece

The tourdion (also spelled tordion) is a lively Renaissance dance closely related to the galliard, widely associated with French court and social dance practice from the 15th–16th centuries.
Many well-known tourdion melodies circulate through early printed dance collections, including publications by Pierre Attaingnant, one of the most important early music printers/publishers in Paris.

This edition is arranged as a practical soprano + alto recorder duet in A minor, ideal for consort class, teaching ensembles, and short encore-style performances.

Practical duet tips (soprano + alto)

  • Blend & tuning: tune unisons and thirds slowly; keep the alto as the stabilizing “core” voice and let soprano float above without forcing.
  • Dance articulation: aim for light, buoyant attacks—clear tonguing, but not heavy or aggressive.
  • Phrase in pairs: dance repertoire often works best with obvious two- and four-bar phrasing; keep the pulse energized and consistent.
