Known internationally as “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring” (German: “Jesus bleibet meine Freude”), this is one of Bach’s most beloved chorale-based movements, celebrated for its flowing line and serene, uplifting character.
The chorale comes from Bach’s cantata Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben, BWV 147 (1723), where it appears twice with different German texts (the famous English title became popular later through well-known piano transcriptions).
Because it balances simple melodic clarity with deep expressive weight, it works beautifully in intimate settings—weddings, receptions, chamber concerts, and teaching contexts where tone and phrasing matter more than speed.
Keep the flow calm and continuous—avoid heavy accents. Think in long phrases, and let cadences open naturally with subtle dynamic waves. If a section repeats, create contrast through lighter articulation or a softer cello support, while keeping the pulse steady and serene.
