About this piece

“Frog's Theme” is one of the most recognizable character themes from the classic role-playing game Chrono Trigger, released in 1995.

Composed and arranged originally by Yasunori Mitsuda, it is officially listed as track 19 on the Chrono Trigger Original Soundtrack Revival Disc. The piece is associated with Frog and reflects the character's knightly identity through a strongly heroic, noble and adventurous musical character.

Its memorable melody, compound-meter rhythm and fantasy atmosphere have also made it especially attractive to musicians interested in JRPG soundtracks, medieval-fantasy repertoire and folk-influenced instrumental music.

Although the work is Japanese video game music rather than traditional Celtic or medieval music, its melodic and rhythmic character adapts very naturally to acoustic melody instruments such as the violin.

About this Violin edition

This edition by Maiko Thomé de Araujo presents the complete recognizable melodic material in E minor for violin, with chord symbols directly above the staff.

Rather than offering melody alone, the score preserves a detailed harmonic framework, including richer chord colors and inversions that help retain the character of the theme and make the material useful for accompanied performance, rehearsal or arranging.

The one-page layout is compact and practical while still retaining dynamics, articulations, phrase markings and expressive indications.

Chord symbols included

The included harmony makes this edition useful for more than solo violin practice.

The chord symbols can support:

  • piano or keyboard;
  • guitar;
  • ensemble arrangements;
  • backing-track creation;
  • harmonic study;
  • rehearsal and recording.

This gives the player a ready harmonic reference instead of requiring the accompaniment to be reconstructed from a melody-only transcription.

Performance tips

Feel the 12/8 meter as four larger beats, each divided into three, rather than treating every eighth note separately. This helps preserve the theme's forward-moving heroic character. Keep the faster figures clear but connected, and use the written dynamic contrasts to give shape to the repeated melodic material rather than playing the entire theme at one intensity.

Recommended for

Especially suitable for violinists who enjoy Chrono Trigger, JRPG music, game soundtracks, fantasy repertoire and cinematic themes. It also works well for lessons, recitals, recording projects and players developing compound-meter reading, expressive dynamics and performance with harmonic accompaniment.
